Although rumors have recently swirled about TikTok’s demise in the US, it is likely here to stay. TikTok has quickly become one of the most-used social media platforms, with its 60-second or less videos getting thousands, sometimes millions, of views. Brands, entrepreneurs and influencers have been using the platform to promote themselves and have seen great success. So, is TikTok the new place for your business to be?
Lately, many in America have been concerned about the privacy and safety of using the Chinese app TikTok. However, experts agree that it isn’t any less safe than major American social media platforms such as Facebook or Instagram. While it is always important to be aware of the information you consume on social media, TikTok does not pose any more threat to individuals than other top platforms. According to Forbes, “TikTok captures data as you use the app, it is brilliantly positioned to infer your likes and dislikes, friends, pastimes, consumer behavior, locations, even patterns of life. And while the data might seem intrusive, it’s the same with Facebook and Google and countless other apps that you give permission to tap the data on your device.” This is not any better or worse than thousands of other free apps that want to monetize the data they are collecting. If you are thinking about putting your business on TikTok, you must first consider your target audience. As of February 2020, 26.5 million monthly active TikTok users are from the United States. Globally, about half of TikTok users are under the age of 34, but the number of U.S. adult users has grown by 5.5 times in the last 18 months. It is important to note however, that these statistics were found right before much of the country was stuck inside in quarantine, so American users of all age ranges have likely skyrocketed in the past few months. Next, think about how you would like to use the app. Do you want to pay an already well-known influencer to feature your brand or product? If you can find someone who aligns well with your brand, this could be the way to get your name out to a wide audience quickly.
If you would rather create your own platform on TikTok, here are some things to consider:
Stay up to date with new trends and challenges. Respond to other brands’ challenges and create your own to encourage people to interact with your videos. Jumping on trends that are sweeping through TikTok is a great way for your business to tap into the potential of going viral.
Don’t create hard-sell ads. It is better to be candid and have fun. Informal, humorous videos perform the best on TikTok. If you’re willing to be witty and make fun of yourself just a little bit, your company has the potential to gain traction quickly on TikTok. (1)
