Over the past 100 years, many things have changed, from technology to communication and everything in between. Marketing is no different. When many people think of marketing historically, they may think of characters portrayed from the Golden Age of Marketing such as Don Draper (Mad Men) or Darrin Stephens (Bewitched) working on advertising campaigns, slogans and copy. Even though these characters are fictional, their careers do parallel those who worked in marketing during The Golden Age. The Golden Age of Marketing started in the 1960’s and lasted until the 1980’s. “It was a time of big ideas, three-martini lunches and larger-than-life personalities who graced both the society pages and the business columns” Jerry Della Femina commented. One of the most popular and memorable campaigns that came from this era is Coca Cola’s 1971 “I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke” campaign. The thought and creative development process may be the one thing that has stood the test of time. It is interesting to look back at previous campaigns and see what was created. Below are a few additional advertisements that were created and promoted during The Golden Age. Do you think these ads would still be effective today?
The world is always changing. Over the past 100 years, the way companies reach their audience has changed. Newspapers, radio and television were once the best ways to reach audiences. Today, social media, influencers and word of mouth are popular forms of marketing. It is vital to keep up with progression because you don’t want to be left behind. If businesses do not adapt to new forms of marketing, they will have a harder time reaching their intended audience and risk losing their current customer base. The way businesses reach their target audience has evolved. As time goes on, marketing will need to continue to change in order to stay relevant.
It is important for companies to use a variety of channels to reach audiences such as radio, television and print to social media. Having a mixture of channels will help businesses reach more people than just one form could. Creating unique content for each channel will also keep audiences engaged. No one wants to hear the same thing over and over again. After a while the audience will tune out or focus on something else. It would be beneficial for a business to create a concept that a variety of content can be generated from.
